Antarctica depicts the Lucy + Jorge Orta’s incredible expedition to Antarctica in 2007 where under the most extreme conditions the artists installed their ephemeral work “Antarctic Village - No Borders” aided by scientists stationed at the Marambio Antarctic Base. “Antarctic Village - No Borders” resembles an encampment of dome-shaped dwellings that are made from fragments of clothes, gloves and world flags symbolising the multiplicity and diversity of people. The fabric is silkscreen printed with motifs and text proposing an amendment to the UN Declaration for Human Rights: Article.13.3. Through the symbolic action of founding the village in Antarctica – the only continent governed by a unilateral peace agreement and where all military activity is banned – the artists propose a vision of a territory where peace and cooperation are tantamount - a land that welcomes all and particularly those struggling to transverse borders, to move freely to escape political and social conflict, and ecological disasters.
