To inaugurate the 14th World Transplant Games hosted by the city of Nancy, the IX Light Works in the series OPERA.tion Life Nexus marks the closure of a decade of artistic research on the symbol of the heart. As well as creating one of the most memorable Light Works and a concert together with French composer Pierre Henry in the Place Stanislas, a UNESCO listed heritage site, the artists rallied the support of the regional council with and collaboration of over 35,000 college students across the region of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Together they drew up the first universal code of ethics for organ donation: The Gift. This charter can now be found enclosed in one of the 70 gold hearts at the tip of a five metre public sculpture created by Jorge Orta for the Place de la République of Nancy.
As the sun set, tens of thousands of people, 1,500 transplant athletes and their coaches from around the world converged on the Place Stanislas to partake in the IX act of the series OPERA.tion Life Nexus. The grandiose ephemeral Light Works combining the striking heart iconography and a musical creation, composed and arranged by Henry, created a choreography of giant images projected onto the facades of the Hotel de Ville, Grand Hotel de la Reine and the two cafes, Faith and Commerce. It was a unique moment of artistic creation dedicated to organ donation and its values.
