This Royal Limoges porcelain diner plate created by artists Lucy + Jorge Orta in 2001 forms part of an ongoing series entitled '70 x 7 The Meal', which unfolds in a series of 'acts'.
The design has an Aztec heart as a central motif, surrounded by letters of the alphabet in platinum and gold. The artists discovered this representation of the heat in the anthropological museum in Mexico City, when they were conducting research for the project 70 x 7. The heart is an important symbol for the artists, evoking love, generosity and empathy. In the Aztec culture, the heart was believed to be the seat of the individual and a fragment of the Sun's heat.
The artists designed this edition for the not-for-profit Escuela 21, which was founded by Lucy and Jorge to support educational opportunities for under privileged children across South America. The first in a series of benefit diners were staged across Mexico City, for a total of 900 guests. The diners took place in the Diego Rivera Museum, the Convento de la Merced and the Casa de Francia.
