The body of work Clouds has grown from Lucy + Jorge Orta's sustained investigation of water and their deep concern for this fragile vital resource. They began sculpting recycled water bottles following a residency in Cairo (2009), where they encountered the now threatened Zabaleen communities who live as the unofficial ‘garbage people’ of the city, recycling 80% of the city's waste materials. The artists' Clouds —represented by organic formations of bundled up plastic bottles— draw correlations between the lack of water in the world and its privatization and reflect on the paradox of the parallel economies, entire cities of people surviving on waste, particularly plastic. Clouds also remind us of the islands of plastic that are polluting our oceans, nebulous shapes covering vaste distances and destroying marine life. At the same time the cloud is a mega-thermodynamic machine, recycling and distributing water on our planet.
