To commemorate the 40th anniversary celebrations of Smiths Row, 70x7 The Meal, act XXXIII was a visual celebration of food, community and the natural world. The site-specific installation took the form of a beautiful dinner table set for 42 guests. Lucy + Jorge Orta crafted a unique piece of work to illustrate the poetic relationship between these different aspects of East Anglian culture. Whilst humanity’s relationship with nature is a recurring theme, each meal is individual, relating to the particular community in which it is held. The Royal Limoges porcelain plates, a limited edition of 150 created especially for the occasion, are populated with plants species inspired by food production and heritage skills, landscape and foraging, wildlife and the web of nature.
Tug at any one thing in nature and the rest will move, the verse inscribed on the porcelain plate is taken from the artists’ film Amazonia, written by eco-poet Mario Petrucci. Other elements of the installation related more closely to the Gallery itself, the blue of the artworks echoed the Wedgwood blue ceiling and the use of salvaged chairs and loaned glass and china emulated the theme of generosity and the Gallery’s work in reducing landfill.
